Ukrainian illustrator Masha Foya has created a cover for the new issue of Guardian Weekly, dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster.
In the issue dated May 1, 2026, the British weekly featured Chornobyl on the cover. It accompanied it with a special report on the current state of the damaged shelter over the fourth reactor. The cover was designed by Andrew Stokes, who suggested that Foya create an illustration.
This is not the first collaboration between the publication and a Ukrainian artist. In March 2022, shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Foya created a cover for the weekly about Russia’s destruction of Mariupol.
Masha Foya is a Kyiv illustrator who works at the intersection of computer graphics and various textures. She has collaborated with The Guardian Weekly, The New York Times, Scientific American, Die Zeit, and Adobe. Among her Ukrainian clients, in particular, are the publishing houses “Old Lion Publishing House”, Vivat, “Publishing House”, and “Nash Format”.
