The Ukrainian Oscar Committee has completed accepting applications for films to participate in the selection for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category from Ukraine.
This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Film Academy.
This year, four films will participate in the national selection:
House of the Word. An Endless Novel, directed by Taras Tomenko
In 1927, a special house was built in Kharkiv under Stalin’s order. The best Ukrainian artists, writers, painters, and directors settled here. The mere possibility of living here was already recognized by the artists of that time. One day, a newcomer appears in the house. He works as a press proofreader and dreams of joining the cohort of leading writers. To settle here, he needed a talent- the talent of eavesdropping and recounting everything he heard to an NKVD agent.
La Palisade, directed by Philip Sotnychenko
1996. Ukraine is preparing to sign a document abolishing the death penalty. Oleksandr, a forensic psychiatrist, and his friend, investigator Ilhar, are investigating the murder of their police colleague. The three men were connected by their work, longtime friendship, and feelings for the same woman. Now, she is the widow of the deceased.
We Were Recruits, directed by Liubomyr Levytskyi
The story focuses on 19-year-old Borys Savenko, a recruit of the 3rd separate assault brigade. His eyes show the fighter’s path from the first steps during the young soldier’s course to actual actions on the front line. The example of his comrades-in-arms with whom he communicates shows how different people have joined the army.
Peaceful People, directed by Oksana Karpovych
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian special services have published hundreds of intercepted phone calls from the Russian military. The most exciting thing is the conversations between the occupiers and their relatives in Russia. The voices of “civilians” – mothers, wives, and friends – open the world’s eyes not only to the course of the so-called special operation but also to the horrific inner world of the society behind it. These intercepts make up the film, which explores the nature of Russian imperialism and colonialism and the role of propaganda in the invasion and addresses the issue of the collective responsibility of Russians.
The Ukrainian Oscar Committee will check the films for compliance with the American Academy’s requirements and hold a meeting to determine the candidate. The meeting is scheduled for September 9.
