John Landau, an Oscar-winning producer of some of the highest-grossing films of all time, including Titanic and Avatar, has died at 63.
Landau, who was a longtime producing partner of director James Cameron, died on July 5 after battling cancer for more than a year.
He was the son of Hollywood producers Eli and Edie Landau. He was an executive at 20th Century Fox, overseeing films such as The Last of the Mohicans and Die Hard 2.
He collaborated with Cameron on the 1997 hit Titanic, which became the first film to break the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The Cameron-Landau duo also created Avatar and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of the Water”. In addition, Landau worked on the next two Avatar sequels, which are due out in 2025 and 2029.
His filmography also includes Solaris, based on the book of the same name by Stanislav Lem, and the manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel.
Landau has co-produced other famous films, including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and Dick Tracy, and has held a senior position at Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment.
