We sat down with Olga Helga, a Fashion Photography Maven, to discuss how to build a successful career abroad and the challenges one might encounter along the way.
What inspired you to become a professional photographer?
From early childhood, I understood that the world is not as it is portrayed to us. I had a feeling that there was something more beyond. I would often gaze out of my window, looking at the sky, and it became clear to me that life is infinite, with no definitive end or beginning. I believed that even after death, I would continue to exist in a different form.
I loved being in nature, spending time outdoors, observing clouds and imagining various shapes. I had a vivid imagination and always found joy in creating and inventing things. Life was incredibly fascinating to me.
In school, my teacher once told my mother that I had “golden hands,” but when I looked at them, I couldn’t understand what she meant. They certainly didn’t appear golden to me. Nevertheless, I was considered a talented child. I excelled in activities such as sewing, drawing, knitting, cooking, and dancing. Whatever I set my mind to, I found success.
When I was 16 I got my first camera, and it brought me immense happiness. Finally, I had a means to capture and share what I had always observed and appreciated. It’s no surprise that photography has become my life’s passion and work until now.
Therefore, each of these moments led me to where I am now.

How did you end up in the United States? Was it related to your career as a photographer?
Not really. I always knew that I would live abroad somewhere, so it’s not surprising that I started doing photography while still living in Ukraine. However, my career took off when I made the decision to move to America. It became a new chapter for me.
What challenges did you face on the road to success in your career, especially in a new country?
As a photographer from another country, the road to build the name and successful career in a new environment has been bumpy. Some of the struggles in the beginning it was cultural and language barriers.
I think the most important thing is being nice and patient to others. The next thing and the most important is building a network of clients, collaborators, and industry contacts. I worked hard to build my portfolio so it will attract a lot of people and bring me more opportunities.
Despite these challenges, my dedication, talent, and perseverance have allowed me to overcome obstacles and achieve success in my photography career. But I still pay a lot of attention to upgrading my portfolio. So it is transformation after transformation; that’s how we grow all the time.
Which well-known brands and famous models have you collaborated with?
Currently, I work extensively with brands, and often the more well-known the brand, the better models they invite for shoots. I have had the opportunity to work with a significant number of professional models. Additionally, my work has been published in prestigious magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Forbes, Vogue, and L’officiel. Once, I had the opportunity to shoot a calendar for Mia Khalifa, and after our collaboration, I gained around 15K followers on my Instagram within a couple of days the calendar was released.
Would you have been able to achieve the same level of success if you had stayed in Ukraine?
Due to the increasing digitalization, it seems like borders are being blurred. I believe that if you possess a unique vision and talent, it is not as important where in the world you make yourself known. Social media is crucial as it provides a wider reach. However, based on my experience living in America, I have gained many interesting connections here, making it a great privilege to be here.

What career aspirations do you hope to achieve this year?
I want to create more inspiring projects that people can look at and find inspiration, discovering new meanings in their lives. It is currently a challenging time for everyone, with many wars and aggression in the world, and I believe that art always helps in difficult moments. It helps us see something beautiful and connect with it and share it with others.
What advice would you give to young photographers aspiring for success in the industry?
For aspiring photographers, I would advise focusing on developing technical skills, exploring different genres, finding a unique style, building a strong portfolio, networking with other professionals, and continuously learning and adapting to industry trends. It’s also important to be persistent, patient, and open to constructive criticism.
Remember, success in any field requires dedication, hard work, and a passion for continuous improvement.
