Periods of conflict have always tested society and every individual citizen. Ukrainians, overcoming the challenges of war, showcase their strength, creativity, and resilience. In such circumstances, interior design becomes not only a means of providing comfort but also a crucial element of spiritual support and self-expression. Iryna Chernii, the owner of the interior design studio CHERNII DESIGN, discusses how interior design in Ukraine will evolve in the aftermath of war.
Iryna, should we expect any changes in housing planning?
A large portion of us already understand that the importance of the recommended “two-wall rule” can literally save lives during missile or artillery shelling. Therefore, at least for the first few years when memories of those horrors will still be very fresh, this rule will be actively followed. Housing planning decisions will take into account such a safe zone within an apartment or house according to the “two-wall rule”. This zone will be located as far away from windows or external walls of the building as possible. Perhaps, the popular open-plan layout before the war, where all rooms were maximally combined and without unnecessary walls, will undergo changes in favor of more separated (fully or partially) rooms.
There may also be changes in planning and organizing storage systems, such as closets, wardrobes, and other technical rooms. The practice of prolonged stay at home, which we experienced during the COVID lockdowns, emphasized the necessity of such rooms, especially for storing additional food supplies, water, clothing, various technical means, etc.
Will there be changes in the choice of style?
Nothing will make Ukrainians give up the idea of living beautifully! It is precisely because of these life principles that there is a high probability that in choosing a style for decorating their interior, Ukrainians in the post-war years will be guided exclusively by global trends. So, while different decorative materials may be used for implementation, the overall principle will remain unchanged. Perhaps, after the war, the nearly lost “lavish classic” style will not reappear, but minimalism will gain even more popularity. The loft style, which is so popular among homeowners but not as captivating for designers anymore, will also remain in trend and may even become a national trend.
However, what will remain unchanged is the use of high-quality materials. Ukrainians who currently reside in Europe pay more attention to quality and expensive materials. They also pay even more attention to details and the actual embodiment of ideas.
Do fashion tastes differ significantly between Europe and Ukraine?
Yes, they do differ quite significantly. Europeans pay much less attention to these matters. They invest less money and buy furniture from IKEA.
Ukrainians, even abroad, will strive for Ukrainian quality. Therefore, even when hiring people for decorative work, they are more likely to choose Ukrainians rather than locals.

Let’s talk about modern trends.
Smart Technologies: Transforming Our Way of Life. Over time, smart technologies are increasingly becoming part of our everyday environment, influencing the formation of new trends in modern interior design. It is predicted that in 2023-2024, the popularity of integrating modern technologies into the home environment will grow. A smart home becomes not only a luxury but also a practicality.
Pastel and Natural Shades. In 2023-2024, the choice of colors for interior design is closely linked to natural shades. Pastel and natural colors, such as forest green, sky blue, or sandy hues, dominate in fashionable palettes. These shades add freshness and calmness to the space, promoting the creation of natural harmony at home. Experts recommend combining pastel and natural shades with richer colors to create accents and express the space’s individuality.
Living Plants in Interior Design. In a world where technology plays a key role, living plants in interior design become not only decorative elements but also a way to create a healthy and energetic space. A variety of green plants, from small succulents to large ficuses, are introduced into interiors as symbols of nature and closeness to it.
Eclecticism: Combining Modernity and Classicism. In 2023-2024, eclecticism not only creates trends in modern interior design but also becomes a practical solution for those who love to combine different styles and epochs.
