European Commission proposes to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU until 2026

On Tuesday, June 11, the European Commission proposed to extend temporary protection for people fleeing Russian aggression against Ukraine for another year – from March 5, 2025, to March 4, 2026.

“Given the ongoing Russian attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure across Ukraine, there are currently no safe and sustainable conditions for people to return to Ukraine. Therefore, the European Commission considers that the reasons for temporary protection remain and that it should be extended for another year as a necessary and appropriate response to the current situation,” the EC said.

The European Commission proposes extending temporary protection for EU Ukrainians from March 5, 2025, to March 4, 2026.

“The European Commission will present its proposal to the Council of Ministers for Justice and Home Affairs on June 13. The EU Council will then have to endorse the proposal formally,” the EC said.

Currently, almost 4.2 million displaced persons from Ukraine are enjoying temporary protection in the EU, one-third of whom are children.
