Entering the world stage: how Ukrainian cinema can conquer the Oscars. Advice from Elvira Paterson-Gavrilova

Ukrainian cinema has a real chance of making it onto the shortlist for the world’s most prestigious award — the Oscars. But for this to happen, it takes more than just talent — it takes strategy, consistency, and an international approach. Ukrainian producer and businesswoman Elvira Paterson-Gavrilova spoke about this at the ELLE Active Forum 2025. Here are her key tips for making Ukrainian cinema more visible worldwide.

Look ahead with a global audience in mind

“Make films not only for the domestic market, but also for an international audience,” emphasizes Elvira Paterson-Gavrilova.

The main idea is that, even at the script stage, you need to consider a context that is understandable both abroad and locally. Even if the theme is Ukrainian, its presentation must be understandable to a global audience.

Invest in cinema as a serious industry

Cinema is not only about creativity, but also about business. We need our business community to view cinema as a promising industry with image and potential, rather than simply as an expense for cultural entertainment. This means attracting large capital, developing a production ecosystem, and support from the state and private sector — all of which are important.

Going beyond the borders of one country: co-productions, festivals, international partners

The world of cinema is not just Netflix or YouTube. It is festivals, awards, professional networks, participation in joint projects with foreign studios, joint financing (co-productions) — this is what creates that very bridge to Hollywood. That is why it is important to work with well-known actors and producers and participate in international forums — this increases the chances that the film will be seen by decision-makers on the big stage.

Truthfulness, depth, and voice

The audience appreciates sincerity and authenticity. This is our trump card. Ukraine, which is experiencing war and transformation, has a unique experience.

“Truth, identity, and courage in expression can become a special Ukrainian formula for the Oscars,” says the producer.

In other words, it is not only important what you say, but also how you say it. Sincerity and respect for your own identity and history are already a competitive advantage.

Don’t wait for them to find you — make yourself known systematically

“You can’t wait for the Oscars to find out about us. If we want an Oscar, we need to make world-class films and promote them so that we are heard. And we need to do this consistently and professionally.”

It’s a big puzzle that includes a communication strategy, a festival plan, marketing, PR — in other words, everything has to be systematic. One “good film” is just the beginning.

The producer’s speech also included a section on cultural diplomacy through artistic and charitable events. Elvira Paterson-Gavrilova spoke about the activities of her Paterson Foundation, which organizes cultural initiatives in Lisbon, Athens, Vienna, Kyiv, and Odesa. She noted that properly created cultural formats can attract international attention, shape new perceptions of Ukraine, and even influence the success of film projects abroad.
