Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone operating system. The deal will be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week.
For Apple, the agreement provides the most sought-after technology of the artificial intelligence era – a chatbot with powerful capabilities that can be combined with iPhone services. In return, OpenAI gets access to hundreds of millions of Apple users.
The OpenAI partnership is likely to be a short- or medium-term one for Apple, as the company wants to develop its own artificial intelligence and implement it on devices.
For now, Apple has to convince consumers, developers, and investors that it can thrive in an AI-dominated era, as Apple’s business has been stagnant, with revenues declining in five of the last six quarters.
So far, the companies have not publicly announced the deal, and the terms of the agreement remain unknown.
According to one of the publication’s sources, Apple chose OpenAI as its first AI partner for several reasons:
- It received better business terms from OpenAI than from Google and its Gemini.
- Apple believes that OpenAI’s technology is the best on the market.
- Integrating Google’s AI into the iPhone could create the impression that Apple’s biggest technological rival has defeated it in a new and vital area.
Previously, Apple had a head start in AI services. In 2011, the company released Siri, a digital assistant, ahead of Alexa and Amazon’s Google Assistant. However, over time, Apple fell behind its competitors.
Before ChatGPT debuted, Apple was silent about its ambitions in artificial intelligence. Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company would take a cautious approach to the use of AI and add such technology through a “unique combination of seamless integration of hardware, software, and services.”
