Ukrainian polar explorers have won several awards in the Scientific Image Competition for Wikipedia. In various nominations, they won three first places and one third place – the largest number of victories for Ukrainian participants in the entire time of the competition.
In the “People in Science” nomination, geophysicist Anna Soina won first place. The jury noted two photos of Oleksandr Bogomaz, a geophysicist with the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition, painting the masts of the passive ionosonde at the “Akademik Vernadsky” station. The center reminds that scientists in Antarctica are engaged not only in research, but also in maintaining the infrastructure. The height of such a mast is 12 meters.
In the “Living Organisms” category, first place was won by Anna Soina and Oleksandr Bogomaz for the cycle “Birds of Antarctica”. Among the awarded works are photos of South Pole skuas during a cry near the Akademik Vernadsky station, a giant petrel on the coastal rocks of Galindez Island, and a skuas with a chick and a white-tailed eagle chick in a nest.
Third place in the “General category” went to Anna Soina for her work dedicated to penguins and regulated tourism in Antarctica.
The competition lasted in Ukraine from November 20 to December 20, 2025. Its goal is to collect scientific images to illustrate Wikipedia articles. This time, 76 authors took part, submitting 744 works – this is the largest figure in recent years, starting from the record-breaking 2020.
