Ukraine plans to use the FURY, “the first Ukrainian robotic navy” project, to deploy underwater drones. Naval News reports that they will be used to attack the Russian Black Sea Fleet ships to destroy them.
Creating such drones is a difficult task, much more complicated than creating surface ships. However, the FURY project’s approach is to cooperate with an experienced Western manufacturer of such drones and, in fact, to weaponize an existing platform. This significantly reduces the development risk and should lead to a much more robust platform than starting from scratch, – the media outlet writes.
Although they are likely to be more expensive than the current drones used by Ukraine, they will be more efficient and, therefore, cheaper in the long run. At the same time, they will require less logistical resources and personnel than conventional submarines.
The re-equipped submarines can carry autonomous weapons, such as mines, torpedoes, or even missiles launched from submarines. They can also be equipped with several sensors and perform reconnaissance missions in addition to attacks.
In recent months, Ukraine has produced more drones, armored vehicles, and ammunition. More than 20 new types of drones alone have been made. All of them meet NATO standards and are promptly sent to the front.
