Ukraine’s population has decreased by 10 million people over the past 10 years to 32 million, while the Ukrainian nation as a whole has 60 million people. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity Oleksiy Chernyshov stated this in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt.
“On our independence day, 52 million people lived in Ukraine. Over the next 10 years, this number dropped to 48 million. Before the first invasion, it was 45 million. In 2015, after the annexation of Crimea, the population dropped to 42 million. And now, at the end of 2024, the country’s population was 32 million – an impressive figure,” Chernyshov said.
He noted that the Ukrainian nation has about 60 million people in general, but half of them live outside Ukraine and consist of refugees, people who left the country before the war, and the diaspora. According to Chernyshov, about 5 million Ukrainians who fled the country because of the war live in Europe.
Chernyshov noted that for one-third of Ukrainians, the first factor in returning home was the end of the war. The success of economic and democratic reforms in the country is also essential.
