Ukraine prepares for record gas imports from Europe as Russian attacks boost demand - Bloomberg

Bloomberg reports that Ukraine is preparing to import record volumes of gas from Europe as Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and rapid depletion of fuel reserves have led to increased demand.

“We believe that Ukraine will need up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas in the season from April 2025 to April 2026,” said Dmytro Sakharuk, CEO of D.Trading (a division of DTEK).

For comparison, in previous seasons, the maximum gas imports amounted to 1 billion cubic meters.

It is noted that as a result of Russian shelling, Ukraine’s gas infrastructure has suffered significant damage. The scale of these damages is greater than officially reported, making it difficult to predict the required volume of supplies for the next winter.

Sakharuk said Ukraine has already consumed its so-called buffer, or reserve volumes stored in underground storage facilities. Part of the gas must be stored in underground storage facilities to maintain pressure and ensure safe and efficient storage.
