Ukraine and Germany to jointly develop Freya anti-ballistic system

German defense company Hensoldt and Ukrainian company Fire Point have announced a strategic partnership to create the FREYJA (“Freya”) anti-missile defense system.

“Hensoldt and Fire Point, a leading Ukrainian defense company that develops and manufactures combat-proven unmanned aerial vehicles and missile systems for modern precision warfare, signed a memorandum of intent at the Eurosatory specialized exhibition in Paris. The goal of the agreement is to jointly integrate combat-proven and affordable components into a ground-based air defense system capable of detecting and intercepting ballistic missiles,” Hensoldt said in a press release.

Hensoldt will be responsible for the production, testing, and supply of radar systems for the missile defense system and will facilitate their integration into the system. The high-performance TRML-4D radar will play a key role in this. This radar has proven itself in service over the past years and, thanks to its software adaptability, is ideally suited to the PRM system’s intended purpose. It is based on the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology. It provides reliable detection and tracking of about 1,500 air targets of any type.

Fire Point will act as the prime contractor and assume overall responsibility for developing the missile defense system concept. The company will manufacture, test, and supply its Fire Point FP-7 missiles, including launchers and control systems. In addition, Fire Point will integrate the main components into the system.
