The Ukrainian Book Institute has announced the launch of the “Translate Ukraine 2024” competition aimed at translating Ukrainian literature into foreign languages. Applications will be accepted from February 12 to March 10.
The competition aims to popularize national works abroad and increase Ukraine’s visibility in the international cultural space. The priority areas are classical and contemporary Ukrainian literature, mainly works related to the Russian war against Ukraine, decolonization, the history of Ukraine at various stages, Ukrainian culture, traditions, and life.
To participate in the competitive selection process, UIC will consider projects for the translation of works of contemporary Ukrainian literature and public domain that are written in Ukrainian and published by a Ukrainian publisher before the application is submitted, fully translated, and published by the end of 2024, and with a circulation of at least 300 copies.
The maximum expense the UIC reimburses to publishers is EUR 8000 or the equivalent in UAH.
The competition will consist of two stages. During the first stage, the Institute will check the applications for compliance with the requirements, compile a list, and submit them to the expert council. In the second stage, experts will evaluate the projects according to the criteria in the Regulations of the Expert Council for selecting Projects for the Translation of Ukrainian Literature into Other Languages.
