The European Union is considering extending the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian citizens until March 2028. This announcement was made by European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, who noted that member states are likely to support this decision. Discussions are ongoing regarding a unified approach to future protection measures, and the European Commission’s proposal is expected soon as member states are ready to formalize this framework. Johansson emphasized that the absence of a peace agreement or a sustainable ceasefire in Ukraine in the foreseeable future substantiates the need to extend temporary protection, which grants Ukrainians the right to reside, work, and study in EU countries.
However, she also encourages Ukrainians who have been in the EU for an extended period to consider transitioning to alternative legal bases for residency, as prolonged reliance on temporary protection is suboptimal.
The temporary protection mechanism was implemented in March 2022 in response to the escalation caused by the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion, benefiting over four million Ukrainians. Previously, it was officially stated that extending the protection until March 4, 2027, would be the final renewal, after which the legal status of Ukrainians in the EU would necessitate timely adjustments.
