American actor Sean Penn won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as a war fanatic in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” The actor himself was not present at the awards ceremony, however.
According to sources, Penn had traveled to Europe and planned to visit Ukraine. Two people, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the actor had already left the United States by the time the ceremony aired. They did not specify what he planned to do in Ukraine or where he might go. It was also possible that his route might change.
A representative of the actor declined to comment.
During the ceremony, the host of the “Best Supporting Actor” nomination, Kieran Culkin, announced from the stage that the winner was absent.
For 65-year-old Penn, this victory was the third in his career and the sixth nomination for the Oscar. Previously, this role earned Penny a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild award. Still, the actor did not attend either ceremony. After his third Oscar win, he joined a small group of actors with three such awards. It includes Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson, and Ingrid Bergman.
Since 2022, Sean Penn has visited Ukraine several times. At that time, he was working on the documentary film “Superpower”, dedicated to the Russian invasion.
