Oleksandra Sholokhova wins Ukraine's first gold medal at Euro 2025 in karate

Oleksandra Sholokhova, a 24-year-old Ukrainian karate fighter, became the European champion, defeating Latvian Beata Girvica in the final of the 61 kg weight category. This is the first continental gold in the athlete’s career and the first gold medal for Ukraine at the 2025 European Championships.

Before that, Ukraine already had two bronze medals from Elina Selemeneva and Rizvan Talibov, and Valeriy Chobotar won silver. Euro 2025 is a qualifying stage for the World Cup in Cairo in November, and the winners with the best results will be eligible to compete there. The Ukrainian national team’s best result at continental championships is third place at Euro 2023 in Spain.
