Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Defense Minister of Ukraine, has been appointed as an adviser on defense innovation by Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto. This announcement was made on August 28, during Fedorov’s international trip aimed at enhancing digitalization and defense technology initiatives.
In a statement shared via Telegram, Fedorov emphasized the potential of Ukraine’s defense experiences to inform a new European defense model. He remarked, “The future of defense belongs to countries able to quickly test and scale new solutions, combining technology with strong manufacturing.” This perspective underscores the growing importance of innovation in military strategy.
Commitment to Ukraine’s Defense Projects
Despite his new role in Italy, Fedorov affirmed that his primary focus would remain on Ukraine. He intends to work on initiatives designed to bolster the country’s defenses and attract international support. His recent removal from the defense minister position on July 15, part of a cabinet reshuffle by President Volodymyr Zelensky, had sparked significant public protests advocating for his reinstatement.
Italy’s Position on Ukraine
Italy’s stance regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been complex. On June 19, Crosetto announced that Italy would not contribute to NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which funds the procurement of U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine. He reiterated this position, stating, “We have said no from the beginning, and it is still a no,” despite earlier indications of a potential shift in policy.
Additionally, Italy has expressed reservations about certain EU sanctions against Russia. On June 25, concerns were raised over an EU proposal to restrict entry for former Russian combatants, suggesting that visa policy could address the issue without resorting to sanctions. Furthermore, Italy, alongside Bulgaria, opposed a proposed visa ban on Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, reflecting diplomatic sensitivities surrounding the conflict.
While Crosetto has ruled out the deployment of Italian troops to Ukraine, he has affirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine “in every possible way” short of direct military intervention.
