Moldovan President Maia Sandu conferred the Order of the Republic, the nation’s highest state honor, upon Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on August 24, coinciding with Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day. This recognition underscores Zelensky’s pivotal role in upholding peace and freedom in Europe, a sentiment reiterated by Sandu during a subsequent event in Chișinău.
During a joint press conference with Romanian President Nicușor Dan on August 27, Sandu highlighted the significance of the award, stating, “While Ukraine is engaged in conflict in the east, Moldova can rest easy.” She emphasized Zelensky’s substantial contributions to safeguarding stability on the European continent.
Shared Celebrations of Independence
In a show of solidarity, Zelensky remarked, “A few days ago, the president of Moldova was with us in Ukraine on our Independence Day. Today, Ukraine stands with Moldova on its Independence Day.” Both nations celebrated their 35th anniversaries of independence just three days apart, reinforcing their commitment to mutual support.
Furthermore, Ukraine and Moldova are advancing their European Union integration efforts in tandem, with their accession processes closely linked.
Trilateral Discussions in Chișinău
During a trilateral meeting with Sandu and Dan, Zelensky addressed key issues including energy cooperation, shared infrastructure, security capabilities, and EU integration. “It is crucial that we are united—Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania,” he stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration among neighboring countries in the face of regional challenges.
Sandu also reported that five Russian drones had violated Moldovan airspace just hours before the independence celebrations, framing these incursions as acts of intimidation from Russia. She reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to EU membership despite these provocations.
Escalating Tensions with Russia
The meeting occurred against a backdrop of rising tensions, as Moldova and its allies, including Romania, have faced repeated airspace violations by Russian drones. Reports indicate that Russia is contemplating further military escalation, viewing Ukrainian actions as NATO provocations due to the alliance’s support for Kyiv.
As the situation evolves, Ukraine’s intelligence agencies have warned of a potential new wave of Russian mobilization, which could see an additional 600,000 troops deployed in the coming years. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has accused Western nations of exacerbating the conflict by supplying Ukraine with advanced military technology.
