Mstislav Chernov’s film 2000 meters to Andriivka (2025) was screened at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival on May 13 as part of the Day of Ukraine.
The film was the last to be screened for the special Ukraine Day screenings. Mstislav Chernov, the director of 2000 Meters to Andriivka, was in the cinema to present the film. In his speech, the Oscar-winning director thanked the Ukrainian military for the opportunity to present the film.
The film tells the story of one Ukrainian platoon of the 3rd Separate Mechanized Brigade to overcome a heavily fortified kilometer of forest to liberate a strategically important village from Russian troops. The journalist accompanies them, but the further they move through their destroyed homeland, the more they realize that this war may never end.
The film’s shooting began in September 2023, and the entire work took almost a year and a half. In addition to Chernov, the film was created by photographer Oleksandr Babenko and producers Michelle Mizner and Rainey Aronson-Rath. The music for the film was created by two-time Grammy Award-winning composer and music producer Sam Slater (Chornobyl, The Joker).
The director’s previous film, 2000 Meters to Andriivka, is part of a collaboration between Frontline and the Associated Press that explores Russia’s war against Ukraine.
