Currently, 4.3 million Ukrainians enjoy temporary protection in the European Union. However, the number of persons with this status is decreasing.
According to the latest data from Eurostat, as of January 31, 2024, 4,303,115 refugees from Ukraine enjoyed temporary protection in the EU countries. In January, the number of people from Ukraine with temporary protection in the EU decreased by 9,100.
The following countries hosted the most Ukrainian refugees on January 31:
- Germany (1,270,150; 29.5% of the EU total);
- Poland (951,560; 22.1%);
- Czech Republic (381,190; 8.9%).
Over the month, Germany received +18,905 arrivals, the Czech Republic +8,155, and Spain (+2,830; + 1.5%).
At the same time, in January, there were fewer Ukrainians with temporary protection in such EU countries as:
- Italy (-18,125 people; -11.2%);
- Poland (-3,235; -0.3%);
- Estonia (-225; -0.6%);
- France (-205; -0.3%);
- Luxembourg (-10; -0.2%).
More than 98% of people with temporary protection in the EU are Ukrainian citizens. Adult women make up 46.1% of temporary protection beneficiaries in the EU. Children comprise 33.2% of the total, and adult men comprise 20.7%.
According to the UN, there are now more than 6 million Ukrainian refugees abroad. Most of them are in European countries.
Most of the expenses are vital. In particular, people often spend money on food in European supermarkets and stores.
