Microsoft adds spell check and auto-correct to Notepad after 40 years

Users of the Windows 11 operating system now have the function of spell-checking and auto-correcting words in the Notepad text editor.

This was reported by The Verge.

Microsoft’s Notepad duplicates the function available in Microsoft Word. Visually, it is almost the same as Word or Edge — words with errors are highlighted, with red underlining to clearly show mistakes.

The Word editor received a spell checker feature in 1985 when it was initially known as Multi-Tool Word for Xenix and MS-DOS systems. In 1983, Notepad was created as a stripped-down version of Word, but with much less functionality. And now, 40 years later, spell check and auto-correct have been added to Notepad.

Why is Notepad being updated?

Microsoft is gradually adding more and more features to Notepad as the company stops supporting the WordPad analog program, which is being phased out of the OS.

As of today, Notepad already has character counting, dark mode, tabs, and integration with the Copilot artificial intelligence tool.
