On January 29, Ukraine marks the Kruty Heroes Memorial Day, honoring the students and cadets who died heroically during the fighting in 1918 to defend the country’s independence. This date became a defining moment in Ukraine’s history, determining its path to freedom and independence.
The Battle of Kruty, where 520 students and free Cossack soldiers participated, symbolized heroism and devotion. Against the numerical superiority of the Bolsheviks, the Ukrainians bought time and stopped the offensive before dark. Their actions became decisive for Ukrainian statehood, stopping Russian troops and keeping the flame of independence alive.
Today’s defenders honor the memory of the Kruty Heroes by continuing their work of defending independence. On this day, events and ceremonies are held in Ukraine to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for a free and independent country.
