This year, Ukrainians spent an average of UAH 1188 to prepare 12 traditional Christmas dishes, as evidenced by the data of the Better Governance Delivery Office (BRDO) study’s “Christmas Table Index.”
The most expensive vegetables were cabbage (+221%), potatoes (+151%), and beets (+86%). The prices of wheat (69%), raisins (55%), and nuts (35%), which are the main ingredients for kutia, also rose significantly.
Some products have fallen in price, particularly buckwheat (42%), carrots (35%), tomato paste (20%), and carp (16%).
To calculate the “Christmas basket” index, BRDO experts used the current prices of large food chains with national coverage.
The analysis includes products necessary for the preparation of 12 traditional Christmas dishes: kutia, compote, lean borscht and stuffed cabbage, stewed cabbage, beans, pickled mushrooms, baked carp, herring, donuts, Christmas cake and dumplings with cabbage.
