The number of registered cases of domestic violence in Ukraine has increased by almost 80% compared to last year.
Iryna Shurkhno, Head of the Department for Combating Domestic Violence at the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, announced this during the national marathon.
According to her, as of today, 8,185 criminal offenses related to domestic violence have been registered. More than 5,000 people have been affected, primarily women and children.
Shurkhno noted that in times of war, the problem of domestic violence can be exacerbated. However, she said the increase in the number of appeals indicates an increase in people’s trust in law enforcement.
Law enforcement agencies are actively cooperating with state and municipal specialized support services and NGOs to provide comprehensive assistance to victims: medical, social, psychological, and legal, temporary shelter in a shelter, crisis room, or other center.
However, those who suffer from domestic violence, Shurkhno argues, often downplay the seriousness of the situation themselves. Many victims continue to live with their abuser and do not seek help because they consider violence a personal problem. Concealing such cases can lead to more severe consequences, she emphasizes.
