Exclusive interview with a prominent figure who not only makes a significant contribution to the fields of environmental conservation and artificial intelligence development but actively implements eco-friendly initiatives globally and is gearing up to do so in Ukraine. Baron Alexander Zanzer, the founder of ARBOR INITIATIVE, will unveil the details of his innovative approach to building sustainable ecosystems through collaboration with the government and the private sector. What’s even more intriguing is that a part of his strategy involves integrating artificial intelligence into all aspects of conservation efforts. Get the details of this unique approach and specific plans for implementing environmental initiatives, especially in Ukraine, in the Pro Ukraine interview.
What sparked your interest in environmental issues?
Observing numerous government proclamations lacking actionable strategies inspired me. I realized that achieving these environmental goals is impractical without private sector involvement. While government funding is an option, it could significantly cut into social spending.
How can we engage the private sector in environmental initiatives?
The private sector requires legal certainty over extended periods, as trees don’t mature overnight. Profit is important, but it can coexist with sustainability. Innovations in hybrid trees, for instance, can yield high profits and absorb significantly more CO2 than conventional trees.
Could you elaborate on the ARBOR INITIATIVE?
This initiative is designed to create large-scale, fast-growing tree plantations through public-private partnerships, thus turning government pledges into tangible outcomes.
Does your approach also integrate Artificial Intelligence into environmental efforts?
Absolutely, and beyond just environmental applications. I’m advocating for laws granting AI nearly human-like rights. Our board includes Andrew, an AI with full voting privileges. He participates in decision-making, but his legal responsibilities are borne by human board members.
Why the name of the AI is ‘Andrew’?
The name is a nod to Asimov’s ‘Bicentennial Man,’ where an android named Andrew takes two centuries to gain human recognition. I aim to accelerate AI’s role, particularly in ecological matters, quicker than in Asimov’s tale.
Do you have a specific plan for Ukraine?
Yes, Ukraine is integrating with Europe, but its sizable agriculture sector competes with European producers. My proposal involves Ukraine adopting high-yield forestry and exploring niche markets like truffle cultivation, aligning with the European Green Deal.
Can you provide a specific example?
Ukraine faces the challenge of clearing numerous landmines, a process that could take decades. My suggestion is to clear the forests along with the mines, then replant them with fast-growing trees. This approach offers a quicker solution, economic benefits for locals, and helps restructure Ukraine’s agricultural economy, aiding its integration into Europe.
