A monument to Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka was unveiled in the Spanish capital, Madrid. The monument was erected on Plaza de Lesya Ukrainka – a square named after Lesya Ukrainka. It is located next to the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain. The opening was timed to coincide with the 155th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka’s birth.
The author of the sculpture is Honored Artist of Ukraine Mykola Obezyuk.
The idea for the installation arose back in 2018, when, thanks to the joint work of the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain and the Ukrainian diaspora, in 2020 the Madrid City Hall decided to name one of the squares of the Spanish capital after Lesya Ukrainka. The Ukrainian Foreign Policy Association and the Embassy of Ukraine in Spain coordinated the efforts to implement the project.
