The international competition World Press Photo 2024 has announced the winners, including Ukrainian photojournalist Yulia Kochetova and German photographer Johanna Maria Fritz.
Yulia Kochetova won the award in the European region for documenting Russia’s war against Ukraine in her project War is Personal. This work is an interactive page that combines photographs, correspondence, drawings, and audio. Ukrainian DJ Daria Kolomyets created the music for the project, and Oleksandr Komiakhov created the illustrations. You can view the project here.
According to the jury, the emotional images make the presentation more expressive than many other works about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The jury noted the work’s cinematic quality due to its fascinating use of audio and illustrations, particularly in the poetic diary and audio recordings.
Yulia Kochetova is a Ukrainian photojournalist who has been actively covering the consequences of the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Her work has been published by international media such as the BBC, The Guardian, The Telegraph, National Geographic, and others.
Also, the World Press Photo 2024 award in the European region went to German photographer Johanna Maria Fritz for her coverage of the floods in the Kherson region caused by the Russians’ explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in June 2023. She shot a photo report for Die Zeit entitled “Kakhovka Dam: Flooding in the War Zone.”
