A Ukrainian woman has climbed the summit of Nanga Parbat, one of the most technical and demanding eight-thousanders in the world, for the first time. She was mountaineer Antonina Samoilova.
Antonina Samoilova dedicated her climb to all Ukrainian mountaineers who died during the war in Ukraine. On her Instagram, the mountaineer said that she reached the summit after a 15-hour night climb. Together with Antonina, Mindaugas Satkauskas set a national record – he became the first Lithuanian to climb Nanga Parbat.
Nanga Parbat is the ninth-highest peak on the planet, reaching 8,126 meters. This is one of the most technical eight-thousanders in the world, which climbers also call the “Killer Mountain”.
Climbing Nanga Parbat is one of the three deadliest climbs on the planet. The name of the peak is translated from Sanskrit (ancient literary language of India) as “Mountain of the Gods”.
