Ukraine will receive $415 million in funding for its education system over three years until 2027. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, and the World Bank have signed several agreements under the new LEARN support program “Increasing Accessibility and Sustainability of Education in the Context of the Crisis in Ukraine.”
The program aims to provide students and teachers safe conditions for quality full-time education.
Primarily, the funds will be spent on:
- construction and modernization of shelters;
- purchase of safe and inclusive buses for student transportation;
- providing all basic school students with updated textbooks and teaching materials that meet the principles of the New Ukrainian School;
- professional development of teachers and school leaders by the NUS standards.
The LEARN program consists of two parts: humanitarian aid, which will be used to restore access to full-time education in Ukraine and grant financial assistance, which will be used to reform the New Ukrainian School. In particular, the grants will support the piloting of the NUS in basic school grades 8-9 and in high school grades 10-12.
“This reform will not only modernize the education sector but will also bring the system closer to European Union standards,” said Bob Som, World Bank Regional Director for Eastern Europe.
By the end of 2024, Ukraine will be able to receive $200 million to support and implement educational reforms.
