The Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category, making it the second time in history that a Ukrainian movie has been nominated for this prestigious film award.
Four other films will compete in the same category:
- “Bobi Wine: The People’s President”
- “The Eternal Memory”
- “Four Daughters”
- “To Kill a Tiger”
A total of 167 films were allowed to participate in the nomination, and then 15 were selected for the shortlist.
As for the story of 20 Days in Mariupol, the film tells about the first weeks of fighting in Mariupol during the Russian invasion. The filming was conducted by director and photographer Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Malolietko, and producer and journalist Vasylisa Stepanenko. This team was the last journalists to document the beginning of the destruction of Mariupol by Russian forces, and they were all awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this.
