The Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture and the Ukrainian Federation of Food Banks (UFBP) have signed a memorandum of cooperation to work on a draft law establishing a network of food banks in Ukraine.
Every year, about 3 million tons of food waste is generated in Ukraine, even though a significant portion of this food is still suitable for consumption. At the same time, millions of Ukrainians need humanitarian and food support. A draft law has been developed to establish a food bank system in Ukraine. This mechanism allows edible products to be transferred from producers and retailers to charitable organizations instead of being disposed of. He noted that this model has been successfully working in the countries of the European Union and the USA for many years.
In particular, the UFPB proposes amending the legislation to introduce certain benefits for manufacturers and retail chains, making it profitable to donate products to charity rather than disposing of them when their expiration date has passed.
