After a several-year break, Ukraine was again represented at Buch Wien with a separate stand.
“At this year’s fair, books from the following Ukrainian publishers were presented at the joint stand: “Vydavnytstvo Staryi Lev, Chas Masters, Tempora, Bilka, Folio, and Vydavnytstvo. In addition, Ranok Publishing House presented children’s literature at a separate stand. “This return of Ukraine to Buch Wien after a break in 2019-2023 is an important event for both the Ukrainian diaspora in Austria and the domestic book market,” said Hanna Hnedkova, curator of the Ukrainian literary club LiterAktiv in Vienna and head of the Ukrainian Community Media Center.
The United Ukrainian stand at Buch Wien 2024 was created at the initiative of the Embassy of Ukraine in Austria and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Book Institute, and the initiative “Ukrainian Children – Ukrainian Books.”
The fair featured several events related to Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as discussions with leading Ukrainian authors: Andriy Kurkov, Tetiana Maliarchuk, Sofia Andrukhovych, Natalka Sniadanko, Iryna Tsilyk, and others.
Additional meetings with authors and publishers were also organized for the Ukrainian community, particularly in cooperation with the GRND restaurant and the team of the Ukrainian Saturday School in Vienna.
A record number of book lovers attended this year’s fair – 65 thousand.
