Ukraine ranked 40th with a score of 535 points among 116 countries in the international ranking of English proficiency, the English Proficiency Index. This is an average level.

The Netherlands topped the ranking with a score of 636 points, while Yemen scored the lowest with 394 points.

Top 5 countries with the best English proficiency:

  1. Netherlands — 636 points
  2. Norway — 610
  3. Singapore — 609
  4. Sweden — 608
  5. Croatia — 607

The ranking is based on the results of more than 2.1 million EF Standard English Test (EF SET) online tests taken by residents of 116 countries. The test assesses English proficiency in reading and listening skills. It is noted that the test is most often taken by young and motivated people, which may affect the representativeness of the final data.

Interestingly, the global level of English proficiency has been declining for the fourth year in a row. In 60% of countries, the results are worse than last year. Perhaps everyone is simply tired, or maybe artificial intelligence and voice synthesis have made people complacent. But the fact remains: English is still relevant.
