Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said after a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fitzo that Ukraine and Slovakia have started joint work on the creation of a powerful energy hub. This hub will strengthen the energy security not only of these two countries but also of the entire Eastern European region.
The new energy hub envisages using existing gas storage facilities, modernizing the Mukachevo — Velke Kapushany electrical interconnector, and developing cooperation in nuclear energy. As a result, Ukraine and Slovakia will be able to expand their export-import capabilities, which will be an essential step in strengthening the region’s energy sustainability.
One of the project’s key elements is modernizing the Mukachevo — Velke Kapušany interconnector. The work is being financed under the Ukraine Facility program and should be completed by the end of 2028. Increasing the capacity of this line will allow Ukraine to integrate more effectively into the European energy system.
The project, identified as a priority by the Energy Community 19, envisages modernizing the V line to increase interstate electricity flows. The cost of the Ukrainian part of the project is estimated at 15m euros.
