The British government has announced that parents or legal guardians who are in the UK under any of the visa programs for Ukrainians can apply for sponsorship of their child under the Homes for Ukraine program, as reported by the BBC.
In February 2024, the government limited the Homes for Ukraine program. At the same time, the Ukraine Family Scheme, which allowed Ukrainians to join family members who already have permanent residence in the UK, was closed.
According to these restrictions, Ukrainians who do not have the right to permanent residence in the UK could no longer sponsor other people under this program, including their own minor children. Only British and Irish citizens or those with the right to permanent residence in the UK could act as sponsors who provide housing for people.
A legal conflict arose because strange adults with British citizenship could sponsor minors, but their own parents could not.
This led to the separation of families. In addition, some parents resorted to illegal means to bring their children to Britain.
It is noted that more than 190,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the UK since the launch of the Homes for Ukraine program in March 2022.
