Turkey restores access to Instagram

Instagram launches broadcasts only for "close friends"

Turkey has restored access to Instagram, which it blocked on August 2. At the time, the authorities criticized the social network for hiding posts related to the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu wrote about this.

According to him, the ban was lifted on the evening of August 10 because Instagram cooperated with the Turkish authorities and “promised to meet our demands.” In particular, the social network assured that it would work on “censorship applied to users.” The minister’s post did not specify what kind of censorship was meant.

The cybersecurity monitor NetBlocks confirms that Turkish Internet providers are gradually restoring access to Instagram.

Users protested against the Instagram ban. For example, small businesses were losing customers they had reached through the social network. According to the Statista data platform, Turkey ranks fifth in the world in terms of the number of Instagram users after India, the United States, Brazil, and Indonesia. The social network is used by 57 million people in Turkey.
