The tradition of creating Boyko Easter eggs with a pin has been added to the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
The tradition exists in the places where the Boyko people live, in particular in the cities of Turka and Sambir, as well as in some villages of the Sambir district of Lviv region and some villages of the Zakarpattia region. And also abroad – in Israel, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Belgium and Poland.
Pysanka is considered a talisman, a symbol of fertility and the rebirth of life. Many of the symbols on Boyko pysankas correspond to ideas about nature and the universe, and the spirals, or “kryvulki,” are a symbol of the interconnectedness and repetition of life, and the relationship between generations.
The colors of the pysanka also have a meaning. Red is the joy of life, yellow and orange are symbols of natural luminaries, green is the awakening of nature, brown is the roots of the family, white is purity of thought, and dark and black are honor to souls.
