OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever is launching a rival AI startup focused on creating secure superintelligence.
At OpenAI, Sutskever was vital in developing large language models, including GPT-2, GPT-3, and the DALL-E image generation model. He disagreed with the startup’s CEO, Sam Altman, on how to quickly commercialize generative AI products and what steps were needed to reduce potential harm to humanity.
Sutskever co-founded the startup with former OpenAI employee Daniel Levy and artificial intelligence investor and entrepreneur Daniel Gross, who worked as a partner at Y Combinator, a startup incubator previously run by current OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
According to the statement, securing superintelligence will be SSI’s sole purpose, adding that investors’ revenue requirements will not burden the project.
