Life expectancy in the world’s largest economies is significantly higher than in Ukraine

The share of Ukrainians dissatisfied with the direction of the country's development has increased to 46%

The global life expectancy ranking shows a significant gap between the richest countries and Ukraine, which continues to overcome difficult demographic challenges. According to Visual Capitalist, Japan remains the world leader in longevity, while Ukraine shows indicators inferior to most of the top 10 countries in terms of GDP.

According to 2025 data, the highest life expectancy is recorded in the following countries:

  1. Japan: 85 years (the highest ranking).
  2. France, Italy, Spain, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore: 84 years each.
  3. USA: 80 years.
  4. China: 79 years.

Indonesia has the lowest indicator among the 30 largest economies, at 72 years. India and Russia recorded 73 and 74 years, respectively.

Ukraine is not on this list, but UN data for 2025 indicate that the gender gap in life expectancy will remain stable in Ukraine.

Average life expectancy:

  • Women: 80 years.
  • Men: 70 years.
  • Population: 39,000,000 people.

Age structure:

  • 0-14 years: 14%.
  • 15-64 years: 67%.
  • 65+ years: 19%.

Interestingly, the life expectancy of Ukrainian women (80 years) matches the overall indicators of the USA and Saudi Arabia. However, Ukrainian men (70 years old) rank at the bottom of the top 30 economies in the world in terms of life expectancy.

The high proportion of the population aged 65 and over (19%) indicates rapid population aging, characteristic of both developed European countries and Ukraine in conditions of war, migration, and social upheaval.
