British monarch Charles III personally met with Oleksandra Matviychuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties, a Ukrainian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. This was reported on the royal family’s official Instagram account.
The Center for Civil Liberties promotes democratic values, the development of civil society, and respect for human rights. In 2022, the organization’s activities were recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize — the first time in the history of independent Ukraine.
Oleksandra Matviychuk joined the Center for Civil Liberties from its very beginning. She sometimes combined her human rights activities with her legal practice. She prioritized her work at the Center during Yanukovych’s rule when it became clear that the regime was deliberately suppressing any signs of dissent.
In 2014, the Center was the first human rights organization to send monitoring missions to Crimea and Donbas. With the start of the full-scale invasion, the Center initiated the international project “Tribunal for Putin,” which has documented more than 21,000 cases of war crimes.
The meeting in London was yet another recognition of the international importance of Ukrainian human rights defenders’ struggle.
