Cardiac surgeons at Lviv’s St. Panteleimon Hospital have made a revolutionary medical step by performing the first heart surgery using the advanced Da Vinci robot. Serhii Sharikov, a 44-year-old patient with a pre-infarction condition, became the first person in Ukraine to undergo such an intervention.
It should be noted that Serhii from Volyn turned to doctors with shortness of breath and burning pain in the heart, and the diagnosis revealed coronary heart disease. Treatment with medications did not bring the desired result, and Sharikov needed urgent surgery. The threatening situation arose due to the narrowing of one of the heart’s main arteries by 80%.
The surgery lasted three hours and was successful. Serhii Sharikov was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day after the operation, recovered and without complaints. This case marks a new stage in developing robotic cardiac surgery in Ukraine. Lviv’s cardiac surgeons have undergone a long training and internship at leading US and European clinics. Their efforts have led to a historic moment – the first heart surgery of its kind using a Da Vinci robot in Ukraine. This high-tech approach has many advantages, including small punctures instead of large incisions, precision, and fast rehabilitation.
