Recently, the long-awaited film Nosferatu, by the famous director Robert Eggers, was released in Ukrainian cinemas. It is a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name. As it became known, the creation of the new film was influenced not only by the director’s desire to reveal this story in a new way but also by Ukrainian cinema.
Thus, from February 5 to 9, the program Conjuring ‘Nosferatu’: Robert Eggers Presents will be screened at Lincoln Center in New York. The program will consist of 9 films, including 2 Ukrainian films – Andriyesh (1954) by Sergei Parajanov and Ivan Kupala Evening (1968) by Yuriy Illienko, which were provided by the Dovzhenko Center especially for this event. This choice should not be surprising, as another Parajanov film, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965), is on Eggers’ list of favorite movies.
“Parajanov’s love for folk culture is very contagious. He makes this Hutsul culture alive and so exotic. I know much about Carpathian culture and Slavic folklore, so the film is no longer a mystery to me. But when I first saw these images, which I could not understand, I was completely captivated,” the director said in an interview.
