Aliexpress tax: how the EU wants to tighten controls on small parcels from China

The EU wants to impose an import duty on all goods from Chinese platforms Temu, Aliexpress, and Shein. That is, it plans to abolish the €150 threshold below which imported goods are exempt from customs duties.

Reportedly, this taxation aims to stop the influx of so-called low-quality goods from China into the EU. According to the European Commission, last year, 2.3 billion goods were imported into the EU, the value of which was below the duty-free threshold of 150 euros.

These rules will apply to all online stores that deliver goods directly from outside the European Union to EU customers. For example, US-based Amazon usually uses sellers based in Europe.
