19-year-old Ukrainian wins gold at the European Swimming Championships

Ukrainian swimmer Nikita Sheremet won a gold medal at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris. The 19-year-old athlete won the 50-meter freestyle, setting a new Ukrainian record.

During the semi-final swims, Nikita Sheremet showed a time of 21.38 seconds. With this result, he repeated the national record and led the overall standings.

In the final, Sheremet covered the 50-meter mark in 21.13 seconds, surpassing his own semi-final time, updating the Ukrainian record and winning his debut gold at the European Long Course Championships. Earlier, in 2025, Nikita had already become the vice-champion of Europe at the same distance, but in a 25-meter pool.

Shremet was joined by another Ukrainian, Vladyslav Bukhov. He also won his semi-final (21.51 seconds) but finished fifth in the final, failing to repeat his bronze-medal success at Euro 2024.
