Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has announced the procurement of the ‘Alexa Spatium,’ a domestically produced jet-powered interceptor drone, aimed at countering Russian aerial threats. This development marks a significant enhancement to Ukraine’s military capabilities in the ongoing conflict.
Described as the “first Ukrainian jet-powered drone interceptor,” the ‘Alexa Spatium’ was unveiled in a press release on August 22. The drone is designed to target various Russian drones, including the Geran series, as well as small aerial and ground targets.
Measuring approximately 1.5 by 1.7 meters (5 by 5.5 feet), the drone is launched from mobile catapults, allowing for rapid deployment. A video shared by the ministry showcases its launch from a compact catapult system.
While specific performance metrics remain undisclosed, the ministry indicated that the drone can achieve high altitudes and boasts a substantial operational range. Constructed from lightweight, durable composite materials, it is powered by a robust turbojet engine.
The ‘Alexa Spatium’ can be equipped with various warheads, including high-explosive fragmentation, shaped-charge, or thermobaric options, depending on mission requirements. Its targeting capabilities include TV and infrared systems, enabling it to operate with pre-programmed coordinates or direct guidance.
Additionally, the drone features reliable control and video transmission systems, allowing for real-time monitoring. Notably, it can return to base for reuse if it does not complete its mission.
The press release did not provide details regarding the drone’s manufacturer or the origin of its name. As the conflict continues, various Ukrainian arms manufacturers are developing similar jet-powered interceptors in response to the increasing use of high-speed Russian drones.
Military analysts have noted that the new Geran drones are approaching cruise missile capabilities, prompting Ukraine to enhance its aerial defense systems. In a recent development, Firebolt Engineering, a UK-Ukrainian arms maker, successfully demonstrated its Griffen jet-powered drone’s ability to intercept a Russian Shahed drone, marking a significant achievement in Ukraine’s defense efforts.
