The therapeutic garden at the Kyiv VDNH has become a finalist for the prestigious European Commission award, the New European Bauhaus Prizes. The project was among the top five in the nomination “Strengthening Local Democracy and Ensuring Inclusion”.
The Ukrainian initiative was selected from over 700 submitted applications. The jury assessed the project’s contribution to social inclusion, the development of universal design, and the emotional recovery of wounded soldiers and their families.
A therapeutic garden is a barrier-free multi-sensory space that interacts with a person through all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Such a comprehensive approach helps to reduce stress levels, improve psycho-emotional state and support the rehabilitation process after injuries or wounds.
The New European Bauhaus Prizes are an annual award from the European Commission. They celebrate sustainable, aesthetic and inclusive architectural initiatives that transform urban environments for the better. In previous years, the winners have been large-scale urban renewal projects in Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen and Vienna.
