The UK Government has officially announced its intent to commence negotiations to join the European Union’s £78 billion credit program, designed to support Ukraine. Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to announce this initiative on May 4th at the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to collaborating with the EU to ensure Ukraine has access to the military equipment it needs.
Additionally, the government noted that the additional financing presents opportunities for British businesses to address Ukraine’s pressing needs, particularly in the defense sector. Starmer stressed that enhanced cooperation between the UK and the EU will contribute to increased security during this unstable geopolitical period.
As a reminder, on April 23rd, the EU Council finalized decisions to launch the ‘Ukraine Support Loan’ financial instrument, totaling up to €90 billion for the years 2026-2027. This funding involves raising capital via international bond markets secured by the EU’s budget reserve. It includes modifications to the EU’s long-term financial framework for 2021-2027. According to the plan, Ukraine will receive €45 billion in 2026 and €45 billion in 2027.
