Hollywood actor Sean Penn has become the executive producer of the documentary “Black Sunflowers.” The film by American director James Marcus Haney tells the story of young people living in Ukraine during a full-scale war.
The audience will be shown the stories of a young soldier who dances at a rave with a prosthesis, an army truck driver who races in the rear, and a girl who becomes a war photographer. According to the director, he sought to capture the part of Ukrainians’ everyday life that is often overlooked by Western media.
The world premiere of “Black Sunflowers” will take place on September 11 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). A Ukrainian team of producers worked on the film together with international specialists.
For Sean Penn, this is the second major project about Ukraine after the release of his documentary “Superpower” in 2023.
